Our Lady of Aparecida (Portuguese: Nossa Senhora Aparecida), usually referred to as the Aparecida Virgin or Black Virgin, is the patron saint of Brazil, venerated in the Catholic Church. A dark-skinned Marian apparition, Our Lady of Aparecida is represented by a small wooden statue housed in the Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida, which is the second most visited Marian shrine in the world, being able to hold up to 45,000 worshipers. Her feast day is celebrated on October 12, which has been observed as a national holiday since Pope John Paul II consecrated the Basilica in 1980.
